This reference work provides entries on every national legal system in the world, international and transnational legal institutions, subnational judicial systems in nations such as Australia, Canada, and the United States, basic legal and jurisprudential concepts (“administrative law” “capital punishment”), general legal systems (“common law,” “customary law,” “critical legal studies”), institutional procedures (“certiorari, writ of,” “habeas corpus, writ of”) and legal practices (“cause lawyering,” “plea bargaining,” “notaries”).  General historical, political and social information on national and subnational jurisdiction, national maps and diagrams of judicial systems are included.  Most entries are average about five large size pages of text and bibliography.  Overall, this publication is the best available single location for basic information on the institutional features, selection of judges and staff, and politics of law for most of the world’s legal systems.  (Note by Richard A.
